High-Speed Rail Trainsets

The California High-Speed Rail Authority (Authority) is seeking a trainset manufacturer to design, build and maintain Tier III Trainsets for the use on the nations’ first high-speed rail system. California’s high-speed trainsets will be able to achieve sustained speeds of 200 mph and take passengers from San Francisco to Los Angeles in under three hours.

In January of 2014, the Authority and Amtrak issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) regarding a joint procurement for high-speed trainsets. The order would have met Amtrak’s critical short-term need to expand capacity of its current Northeast Corridor (NEC) high-speed service while meeting the long-term operation needs of both Amtrak and the Authority. After receiving feedback from leading global rail car manufacturers, Amtrak and the Authority determined that a common set of equipment would not be economically and operationally feasible for the two separate systems. The joint procurement was rescinded in June 2014.
